MAMA Brings Together Murray Region
“I think people are just really amazed and so pleased to see the scale and the beauty of the architecture”Jaquié Hemsley – Director MAMA
NBRSARCHITECTURE created a design solution for The Murray Art Museum Albury [MAMA], which was recently re-opened to the public, providing a destination which the Albury community will embrace. Located in the heart of Albury’s central business district, MAMA offers flexible spaces for art exhibitions as well as a gallery shop, a cafe/restaurant with an outdoor terrace, a youth members’ room, two workshops for public participation and an extensive collection store.
As a building that is over 100 years old, NBRS developed the design which updated the existing heritage-listed Art Gallery building as well as the adjacent Burrows House and added a striking two-storey addition at the rear to accommodate major touring art exhibitions. The Art Gallery boasts large flexible spaces with adjustable natural lights, controlled environmental conditions and removable walls. One of the most recognisable features to the Art Gallery is the steel sculpture by Matt Harding on the outside of the building that lights up and changes colours attracting those who are wandering the city at night.
“MAMA’s brief was to be brazen and controversial and that theme would continue as the gallery welcomed new ideas and exhibitions” said Ms Hemsley. With the new additions, MAMA is ready to host an array of cultural exhibitions, contemporary art collections, and engaging events and classes geared towards the community.
