Inner Sydney Green Square Urban Church
The inner city area of Green Square has regenerated from warehousing to high density residential. Along with the population pressure has come the need for social and community focus. With this backdrop, only 18 months ago, there came the drive to establish an urban church that would be welcoming, transparent, engaged and connected with an urban population. Within that time, the team at NBRS partnered with Grace City Church to take the design from dream to paper by lodging a DA, creating detailed designs and making construction a reality. Reitsma Construction has just completed the building work.
The church is a refurbished late 19th Century shop front and warehouse. The old building in the heart of population dense Green Square had uneven and broken floors, gaping holes where the rain came in through the roof and small spaces not suitable for the gathering and worship. It has all been transformed to be an urban meeting place for a new church initiative wanting to connect in a real way with a vibrant growing community.
Design Director Andrew Duffin and Project Architect Andrew Tripet came up with a design that allows the patina of the old building to feature. Old steel beams are still visible while creating comfortable spaces for cafe’ type meetings and the old warehouse has been freed up to create a state-of-the-art 200 seat auditorium.
As lead pastor Tim Clemens said at the opening Grace City Church is all about the people not just the building, and the team at NBRS wanted to create just that a people-focused urban church desiring to have a transformative impact on this high density part of the City of Sydney.
