NBRS Imagines the Weaving of Cultures for the Design Our Ryde Competition
NBRSARCHITECTURE cross studios came together to produce a provoking urban design solution for the Ryde Civic and Retail Precinct. Our urban designers, architects, landscape architects, heritage experts, and esd/compliance team all interacted to produce a big idea design that weaves cultures together and gathers the community in the way that an indigenous reed basket would gather produce.
The rhythms, patterns and permeability of a woven gathering basket were expressed through a catenary trellis enclosure capturing a sense of arrival and destination as it spans across the main street of Ryde.
The design features a Cultural Centre, Civic Centre, Key Worker Housing, an Incubator Hub, an Outdoor amphitheatre/cinema, active play, passive recreation, water play, a market lawn, apple orchard, and eating and retail spaces. All these elements were woven together created around a theme of connectedness to existing infrastructure, public transport, retail, and adjacent suburban housing.
The success of the design resulted in high connectivity efficiently integrating land use and community wellbeing whilst promoting better designed public open space.
