Creating Quality Learning Environments – Cairnsfoot School
A team of architects from NBRSARCHITECTURE recently visited the finished Cairnsfoot School to celebrate the completion of this project, and NBRS has created a bright, innovative, and exciting learning environment. Construction was recently completed in Brighton-Le-Sands, Sydney, ready for students to start the 2017 school year.
Catering for Kindergarten to Year 12, Cairnsfoot is a school for students with additional needs. Cairnsfoot School aims to provide a caring, safe, quality learning environment while respecting the dignity and individuality of all members of the school. (Cairnsfoot School)
The team at NBRS, led by Design Director Andrew Duffin, Project Architect Ewan Saunders, and Landscape Architect, Andrew Leuchars, created a stimulating learning and development environment that aimed to positively impact and value the lives of the students, staff and families who are part of the Cairnsfoot community.
The various elements of the school have been given careful consideration with regard to the particular needs of the Cairnsfoot students, and create an environment which intersects shelter and challenge. NBRS saw the project from the Masterplanning stage, through to Concept Design and Construction Documentation of the school, including all 17 classrooms, staff and administration facilities, a multipurpose hall, library, landscape features and swimming pool.
The interactive new landscape design includes a bike track, slides, swings, a climbing wall, ‘roadway’ or ‘train track’ paths with pedestrian crossings & signage, climbing hills with built in tunnels, herb & vegetable gardens, orchard planting for group use, balance beams, a ball court, in ground trampoline, climbing frames and a sensory garden with a range of plant types and ground textures.
This new Cairnsfoot design creates a safe and conducive learning environment for the students, assists in the supervision and ease of operation for teachers and staff, and helps families through creating a safe, secure and positive environment where a sense of trust and happiness is reflected in the architectural solution.
