Flexible and Future Focused STEM Science Labs
NBRSARCHITECTURE produced flexible designs and technical documentation to upgrade the Science Laboratory facilities at four schools: Asquith Boys High School, Davidson High School, Northern Beaches Secondary College Cromer Campus and Ryde Secondary College. The Department of Education’s brief was to provide specialised teaching spaces to enable the delivery of science curriculum to students from year 7 to year 12.
NBRS implemented a modern approach to the refurbishment of the science labs to allow flexibility and a range of contemporary pedagogies to occur. The new layouts include different styles of learning modes, catering for directional learning, project based learning and presentation style learning to ensure that all pupils can thrive and excel in a stimulating environment.
Elements such as adaptable furniture allow benches and tables to be re-arranged according to different learning and teaching requirements. Modern finishes such as acoustic ceilings, compact laminate and the use of black vinyl creates a sleek modern finish, which not only future proofs the schools, but emulates a real working science lab.
This idea is extended to the preparation rooms. Designed to serve several labs, they are separated by glass to continue the look and feel of a professional lab. Extensive storage has also been incorporated into the prep room, increasing the practicality and functionality of the room.
Other modern elements such as the use of LED and linear lighting have also been implemented.
