NewLife Bondi Junction: Sensitively Balancing Traditional Design with Contemporary
‘New Life Bondi Junction’ by TWT property, consists of 62 luxury apartments in a thirteen-storey tower with a further ten serviced apartments at the first-floor podium and retail at ground level. Facing onto Oxford Street the podium incorporates the restored façade of a row of former shops, with first floor front rooms and balconies having been adapted for apartments.
59-69 Oxford St, originally a row of 5 shops with residences above, was in very poor condition; it had lost the westernmost building and evidence of the original shopfront and awning.
Returning the façade to the full glory of its ‘Spanish Mission’ inspired architectural character involved paint removal from ceramic tiles, repair and reconstruction of moldings, rendered trims and decorations, tuck-pointing to brickwork panels and implementing a new colour scheme. The statuary on the building includes parapet mounted busts and two graceful female figures in the centre of the first-floor balconies.
The restored façade has become a landmark feature of the ‘New Life Bondi Junction’ project, creating a special relationship between the history of Bondi Junction and it’s exciting, vibrant future.
The NBRSARCHITECTURE Heritage Studio was engaged by TWT Property to provide detailed documentation of the heritage façade and construction phase heritage advice on the project.
