In 2018 NBRSARCHITECTURE is proud to celebrate its 50th year. Sydney, Australia in 1968 was a very different place. The population was expanding and the city was dreaming of becoming a global centre of excellence for commerce, education, culture, health and sport. The 1960s was a great decade to start an architectural practice.
With that backdrop in the year of Beatlemania and the Vietnam War, a Namibian born Noel Bell invited a Chinese born Ridley Smith to form an architectural partnership. The early years of partnership were forged from humble small team beginnings and together they founded a NBRS character that still marks who we are today. Noel and Ridley enjoyed some great early projects with acclaimed recognition. Notably St Andrews House (RAIA Merit Award) and Sydney Square (RAIA Merit Award). From the outset the two young architects defined a stamp on the Sydney landscape but more importantly defined a way of doing business which was people centred along with a drive to improve the built environment.
In our 50th year we can draw on our immense experience and dream with our exuberant youthful team. In 2018 we are structuring our practice with a focus on specialised studios to deliver efficient expertise and continue focus on excellence. The eight studios are based around Education, Justice, Life & Culture, Wellness, Heritage, Landscape Architecture, Interior Design and Advisory. Since 1968 the delivery of architecture and design service has become more and more complex on many levels and we see our new structure will serve us best into the next 50 years.
