Lotus of Dharavi
A Vibrant, Vertical City for India
This design for 1200 new dwellings in the Dharavi Slum precinct of Mumbai draws parallels with the lotus flower. It rises above the horizontal plane below. Its aerated stem structure brings light, air and vibrancy to this new vertical community.
The Lotus of Dharavi is self-supporting. It is a city within a city supporting socialisation, commercial transactions, health, education, and recreation, fresh food gathering, living and sleeping. Counterbalanced to the residential group of floors is a negative space level of open communal space which will support community interactivity and the provision of social services.
