Revitalising a Regional Cultural Hub
Murray Art Museum Albury (MAMA) has been named the national winner for 2016’s MAGNA for best Permanent Exhibition or Gallery Fit-Out. The judges praising the art gallery as an “experience within and without the building”. MAMA is a regional gallery that is at the core of Albury’s cultural community. In this way the upgrade to the gallery has upheld Albury’s position as a hub for regional cultural centre.
The project consists of the refurbishment of the existing heritage listed Art Gallery building (circa 1910) and the adjacent Burrows House building (circa 1870). It provides a new two-storey addition at the rear of the site to accommodate major touring art exhibitions. Additionally there are seven flexible exhibition spaces. The finished project also incorporates a kinetic facade system, light sculptures and interpretive art works. Also a Gallery Shop, a Cafe/Restaurant with an outdoor Terrace, a Youth Members’ room, two Workshops for public participation and an extensive Collection Store.
MAMA was a collaborative project across the Heritage Studio, Interior Design Studio, Landscape Architecture Studio and Life & Culture Studio.
