Gregarious was a one day conference, hosted by NBRSARCHITECTUREÂ in 2011 to support Churches and Christian organisations across Sydney in reinventing their worship spaces to accommodate a new generation. Â For these organisations, often faced with financial, planning and heritage restrictions this church-building process can be an insurmountable task.
Tim Chester and Steve Timmis in their recent book Total Church examined a new mission for church organisations. They describe two key principles for the mission. First, being word-centred (the gospel truth) and being mission centred (truth proclaimed). Secondly, being community centred, sharing our lives as Christians with others in the community.
Many churches desire to embrace and implement these concepts of church and mission and have determined to restructure their buildings to better serve this new mission. Even once this decision has been made, it can be difficult to know where to start.
How would you pull a team together?
How should you structure a plan?
Who should you engage to deliver the type of space that will help church members to disciple each other and be discipled?
The GREGARIOUS 2011 conferencewas the outcome of a team of experts who collaborated to provide practical tools for church building teams grip onto and to guide them through the process to planning and building new facilitates. Â Â It especially targeted ministry staff, church strategists, church elders, parish councilors, project managers, educators, building and planning professionals. It was held in a new community-centred church so that delegates can experience a real project and discuss the real challenges.
