Vertical Integrated Correctional Facilities
Anthea Doyle, the Studio Principal of the NBRS Justice Studio, recently spoke at the Prisons 2018 Summit in Melbourne. Over the 2nd and 3rd of August Academics, Designers, Policy Makers and Corrections Experts came together to discuss the current issues facing the Corrections sector and to consider the future of the industry.
Anthea’s presentation discussed the challenges and benefits associated with Vertical Prisons. Through analysis of current models of campus style prisons and their challenges; remote location, difficulty in sourcing high-quality services and movement of prisoners between justice facilities.
The presentation examining vertical prisons along with other world standard high rise facilities that also use campus style design, such as schools and aged care facilities, looks at the ways that designers are rethinking traditional campus style institutions.
Introducing some conceptual ways of rethinking about program distribution and movement within a high rise prison, the presentation critically discussed different methodologies of moving people that allow for efficient vertical prisons.
